Survey Finds Texas Voters Support More Funding for Public and School Libraries
Norman Oder -- Library Journal, 1/16/2009
Library Journal (http://www.libraryjournal.com/)

There was a very recent survey taken in Texas by telephone. Exactly 1,201 registered voters were telephoned and answered very important questions about their own school libraries and public libraries. This survey consisted of asking the registered voters about their views on increasing funding for their school libraries and public libraries. It was calculated that more that eight out of ten registered voters supported the increased funding for their school libraries and public libraries. Though the survey did not ask the residents how much more they were willing to pay towards the libraries, or if they were willing to trade out another government service for more funding for the libraries, and if so, what that service would be.
These findings were due to the facts that the residents that were interviewed agreed on the many importance’s of their local libraries such as simply the fact that libraries are important to have in their communities, that libraries provide important resources to families and job seekers in hard economic times, and also that “libraries support the economy through job skills training, career and job information, and resources for local businesses”. Also the majority of the residents interviewed were worried about the cut in books and resources that the libraries were going to be able to offer if affected by financial cuts.
I was very pleased when I read this article; this is due to the fact that libraries to me are always going to be important. It’s true that now you can find anything on the internet, but you can’t find that feeling of going to a library on the internet. The whole experience is something that everyone should have the chance to experience and take advantage of. It was also refreshing that so many people find the importance of libraries. They are so historical; it would be an absolute shame if we let them go to the side, due to us having the advantages of the internet.
